The Key To Untold Wealth

The United States, boasting the world’s largest economy, is fast approaching a population of 310 million people. The global population stands at approximately 6.8 billion persons but continues to swell by leaps and bounds. China and India, countries with the largest populations, each have over one billion citizens. The United Nations estimates the global population is expanding by approximately 80 million persons per year. Nearly 220,000 people join the global family each day. Demographers expect the world’s population to peak at approximately 9.4 billion sometime around 2050. Is this the makings of a global tragedy or motivation for human triumph?

Clearly the surging human population presents risks – risks you recognize and appreciate – environmental, subsistence, quality of life, potential for conflict. However, with every new mouth to feed and every young mind to mold comes opportunity. The swelling population need not be a death knell, rather this is an opportunity for ever greater achievement, fresh inspiration, enhanced innovation and even greater success – for individuals, nations and human society at large.

In the final analysis people enable both sides of the supply and demand dynamic. The desires, energy, and focus of human minds produce both wants and needs and the products and processes to fulfill those very same wants and needs. Human beings possess, store, and create value for themselves and for others. The starting point for all achievement is desire. Desire is the motive that causes motion. Desire is the motive that moves mountains.

People experience feelings of lack through their biological nature (survival needs) or through their social nature (observations of others and expectations of what is, or could be, possible for themselves). Feelings of lack are demand opportunities. Human beings, through wants and needs, desires and aspirations, create demand. All industry, all trade, all economic exchange is a product of satisfying demands.

Simultaneously, and fortuitously, desires are the seeds of motivation to fulfill wants and needs. Desires stimulate action to organize, learn, and produce. Human beings, as desire generators, desire factories, naturally recognize a power to proceed and a requirement to act. Desires, and the system built to fulfill desires, are the means empowering and driving action. A growing population increases demand but also increases capacity to meet demand.

The human species has developed such a complex society, hardly anyone possesses the skills or aptitude to survive alone. In his most famous essay, I, Pencil, Leonard Read eloquently observes that even a simple pencil is impossible for one man to create alone and unaided. A product as seemingly simple as a pencil requires untold energy and the evolution of a volume of knowledge far beyond the capacity of one mere mortal. The human story is a social one. We need and rely on one another more than most appreciate and know.

Human beings individually possess immense value. Taken and considered collectively, the wealth of knowledge humanity possesses, the complexity of the system humans have developed and employ, and the collaboration self-interested but practical people engage in to produce, if quantified would be a staggering sum. Yet all this value, all human wealth, the intricacy, power, and complexity or human society, originates from one simple impulse – a desire.

More people assuredly means more challenges, but more people also means more wants and needs to fulfill, more desires to satisfy and more minds and hands to lend to the collective work of satisfying desires. The key to success, the source of untold wealth, is to understand – satisfying desires is what it takes. Desires move you to act. Desires move everyone to act. Desires are key to untold wealth – the master key to riches.
